Summation of Luke's role in Vader's Quest!

Jazbina: Arid world with cat people, Jazbinians. They have a nice arrangement with the Empire: they ship ore to it, the Empire stays offworld and pays reasonably high prices. Shortly post Yavin, King Prepredenko contacts the Alliance saying basically "I would like to help! But my daughter was kidnapped by bandits. Rescue her and Jazbina will support you!"

They send Luke with some diplomat types, but none are Leia or have much force of personality, so when the king says he'll only talk to Luke, they just let that happen. The king claims if a Rebel rescues the princess then the people will favor the Rebels. Buttered up a little and high on his successes, Luke asks no questions and agrees to do it.

He's sent into a sun crystal mine with a floating camera droid, 3DVO, as company. Luke's be-goggled first but it's never clearly explained why he needs goggles. They provide darksight, that's good enough. Luke goes in, fights and rides a giant worm, it crashes dying into the chamber where the Princess Syana and "bandits" are. His goggles break.

Luke says that he's here to rescue her like he promised her father, and ignites his lightsaber. The sun crystals catch, amplify, and reflect the light, and he's painfully blinded. One of the "bandits" says he's from the king, they should kill him.

So twenty-odd people fight a shaking blinded teenager... and Luke wins. Without killing any of them. It helps that they had no blasters or anything more sophisticated than crossbows, but the Force is with him. The king's watching over camera and sends guards down. The princess slaps Luke, calls him an idiot, says that these men are the Jazbina rebel cell. They hadn't kidnapped her, she'd organized and gone with them hoping to get her dad to switch sides. The camera-droid is activated and darts Luke, much to its dismay (no one told it the king was remote-controlling darts built into its chassis. Very against its programming) who collapses as the guards reach the room.

All the Rebels are rounded up. The Princess is held in the palace, Luke and other Rebels are caged, a message is sent to Vader saying Luke was captured, Vader sends a message back commanding Luke be held safe. But the king gets his messages through the camera droid, who's so offended by the darts and not being told it had them that it relays the message as "Kill Luke before I land".

The king tells his daughter, who knows Vader's in orbit. She rushes off enthusiastically, finds Luke in his cell with a blindfold, and shoots him, telling the king to go greet Vader. He does, with the droid filming and broadcasting to the populace. Vader hears Luke was executed (he's just learned who Luke is) and has the king be-dungeoned while he finds out for sure.

The blaster was on stun. The princess broke everyone out and led them to retreat out of the city. Even Luke. Pretty much everyone in the cell dislikes him. He has a lot of time to think in the next two days. A Rebel tells him he can be cured by taking off the blindfold and staring into the sun. This is the EXACT WORST THING to do, the princess gets him to stop. They find out that the king's in awful shape thanks to the guilty droid sneaking in and broadcasting, the king says he's thought and knows he's made a lot of mistakes, but he always loved his daughter. He dies. Stormtroopers find and shoot the droid.

The princess decides they're getting Luke offworld. "You don't have to help me! I've messed up and I'll understand if-" She's not doing it for him, but to spite Vader. So they sneak in at night and meet up with a Rebel pilot Luke knows, who's partially responsible for this mess thanks to his immaturity and is now trying to make up for it. Then Vader and stormtroopers show up.

He says if she hands over Skywalker she will rule in her father's place. "After what you've done? Haven't you ever cared for somebody? No deal!" The natives, who also saw the broadcast, rally. The pilot gets into his fighter and appears to flee. Vader tells his stormtroopers to start firing into the mob.

Luke surrenders, much to the dismay of the cell, but says if it's a choice between him and all these people, that isn't a choice. He starts going into custody when the pilot pulls off a spectacular feat and blows up Vader's Star Destroyer, dying in the process. While that's still star bright the Jazbinians sneak-kill the stormtroopers and the princess shouts "You'll fight a whole planet? Alone?" He leaves. Reluctantly.
